Kaua'i man awaiting trial now facing more charges

Advertiser Staff

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A man scheduled to stand trial next week for heroin possession and a driving hit-and-run was arrested again last week after a traffic stop and cited for a range of new charges, including possession of significant amounts of various drugs.

Police said Byron Say, 37, was stopped for reckless driving March 21 and ran from his car before being caught by a police officer. Police obtained a warrant to search the car and reported finding 33.3 grams of methamphetamines, 1.9 grams of marijuana, 45 morphine sulphate pills and a switchblade knife.

Byron Say and the car's other occupant, Aquila Say, 31, both of the north shore of Kaua'i, were arrested on several different drug charges and a switchblade violation. Additionally, Byron Say was charged with resisting arrest and contempt of court — a charge associated with an outstanding arrest warrant for contempt of court. Aquila Say was also charged with interfering with government operations.

Byron Say had been scheduled for trial Monday — a trial that has been delayed — in a June 2005 hit-and-run case in which the car he was driving rear-ended a motorcycle and ran over its female passenger. In that case, Say is accused of running from the car when it broke down, and dropping a backpack that contained heroin.
