UH softball wins two at LaTech

The University of Hawai'i softball team pounded 32 hits to open the Western Athletic Conference season with a doubleheader sweep of Louisiana Tech at Ruston, La., yesterday.
Valana Manuma, Kaulana Gould and Kristi Yoshizawa each homered for the Rainbow Wahine in a 7-1 victory in the first game.
UH (16-13) scored nine runs in the first inning en route to a 14-4 victory in the second game. The game was called after five innings. LaTech is 7-16.
In the first game, Justine Smethurst pitched a complete game, allowing one unearned run and six hits, striking out seven and walking two. Manuma was 4 for 4. Yoshizawa was 3 for 4. UH had 14 hits.
In the second game, Brandi Peiler was 3 for 4, including a two-run homer. Gould also had three of UH's 18 hits.

BYUH DROPS TWO
Buena Vista University of Storm Lake, Iowa, defeated Brigham Young Hawai'i 3-0 and 2-1 in a doubleheader at BYUH field in La'ie.
Buena Vista is 4-6. BYUH is 7-15.
Brandi Sykora pitched a complete-game seven-hitter in the first game.
In the second game, Kelsey Ripperger singled home Amanda Armstrong to break a 1-all tie in the top of the seventh inning to lift BYUH.
WATER POLO
RAINBOW WAHINE WIN
Iefke Van Belkum scored two of Hawai'i's four goals in the second quarter in a 13-8 victory over UC Santa Barbara in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match yesterday at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
No. 5-ranked Hawai'i is 9-6 overall and 4-2 in the MPSF. No. 8 UCSB is 12-10 and 2-5.
Van Belkum led UH with six goals. Kelly Mason added four.
The Rainbow Wahine scored four goals in the second quarter to take a 6-4 lead. They added four more goals for a 10-5 lead in the third quarter.
TENNIS
UH MEN ON ROLL
The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team won its fourth consecutive match, defeating Wisconsin-Green Bay, 7-0, at UH Tennis Complex.
The 59th-ranked Rainbow Warriors (7-4) have won seven of their last eight dual matches.
UH got straight-set victories from Sascha Heinemann, Ryan Sceats, Chad Faulk, Jarrod Diepraam, Jeff Fitch and Yasuo Sakurai. The Rainbow Warriors also swept three doubles matches for the final point.
BASEBALL
SANTA CLARA TOPS HILO
Eric Newton batted 3 for 4 — including two three-run home runs — to lift Santa Clara to a 10-4 victory over host Hawai'i-Hilo at Wong Stadium yesterday.
Thunder and lightning over Hilo caused the chief umpire to call the game in the top of the seventh inning, according to a UHH athletic department press release.
Hilo is 9-18. Santa Clara is 14-11.
Newton hit a three-run homer in the third inning to give Santa Clara a 7-4 lead. He also hit a three-run homer in a four-run second inning.
