UH swimmer, diver miss finals

University of Hawai'i swimmer Thomas Winkler and diver Mats Wiktorsson missed qualifying for the finals in their respective events yesterday at the 2006 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Georgia Tech's Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
Winkler was 43rd in the 50-meter freestyle preliminaries in 20.06 seconds. The top eight advanced to the A final and the next eight are in the B final.
Winkler will also swim in the 100-meter backstroke today and the 200-meter back tomorrow.
Wiktorsson was 21st in the 1-meter springboard preliminaries with 274.60 points. The top eight advanced to the finals.

Hongzhe Sun, a Stanford junior from Iolani, finished 24th in the 200 individual medley preliminaries in 1:47.35. He also was part of the Cardinal 400 medley relay team that finished third in the A finals in 3:07.96. Arizona won the 400 medley relay in 3:06.08.
Noa Sakamoto, a Stanford sophomore from Punahou, was 40th in the 500 freestyle preliminary in 4:36.06.
Nick Borreca, a Florida senior from Punahou, was part of the Gator 200 freestyle relay team that finished second in the B final of the 200 freestyle relay in 1:19.50. Florida was 13th in the preliminaries.
Mark Eckert, a California sophomore from Iolani, was 32nd in the 200 individual medley preliminaries in 1:47.99.
Auburn leads the team standing after the first day with 178.5 points. Arizona is second (136.5), followed by Stanford (132), Florida (97), and Texas (82).

Pounds died last week at age 49 of a heart attack, his wife said. He starred for the Silverswords in the late 1970s. He is survived by wife, Yvette; daughter Desiree and son Willie Jr.
Services will be Tuesday in his hometown of Pasadena, Calif., the family said.

TWO OIA GAMES GET RAINED OUT; PLAY TODAY
The two O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division games scheduled for yesterday were postponed because of rain and will be made up today.
'Aiea will play at Kapolei and Radford will host Waialua. Both games will start at 4 p.m., weather permitting.

PUNAHOU CRUISES PAST HANALANI IN ILH D-II
Taila Autele scored eight points and four teammates added six apiece, leading host Punahou to a 56-24 victory over Hanalani last night in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II game.
Punahou improved to 3-0. Hanalani, led by Riana Shintaku with 12 points, fell to 0-2.

GOLF
PLAY GOLF AMERICA DAY AT KO OLINA
Play Golf America Day, tomorrow at Ko Olina Golf Club, will feature free instruction, short game evaluations and clinics conducted by Hawai'i PGA instructors.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ko Olina's practice area.
Recent Teachers of the Year Kevin Ralbovsky and Jerry King are among those who will assist at the event. There will also be video swing analysis provided by Ko Olina Golf Academy's Director of Instruction, Sean Lanyi.
Titleist, Cobra, Callaway, Nike Golf, Ping and others will have their latest equipment available to test, with custom fittings available.
