KAILUA — Shanadee Canon sank an off-balanced five-footer with 3.6 seconds remaining in the second overtime last night to lift Kalaheo to a 76-74 victory over visiting Kahuku in an early O'ahu Interscholastic Association showdown.

The Mustangs improved to 2-0 in the OIA Red Conference Eastern Division, while the Red Raiders fell to 0-1.

After Canon's basket, Kahuku's Tayvee Wily advanced the ball past halfcourt but missed a running 35-footer as time expired.

"This is a big victory, but we can't think ahead," said Canon, a junior point guard who finished with 25 points, five rebounds and three steals. "I wasn't surprised it was this close; it's going to be a battle again at their house (in the second round)."

Both teams looked ready to claim victory several times last night in a back-and-forth marathon. Kalaheo jumped out to a 15-10 first-period lead, only to see the Red Raiders rally and go up, 33-26, at the half.

Kahuku built the lead to 40-30 in the third period, but the Mustangs closed it to 44-42 entering the fourth. Kalaheo then began the final quarter with a 14-4 run to lead 56-48 with 3:41 remaining. But the Red Raiders chipped away at the lead and eventually tied it at 61-61 after Salote Livai's layup as time expired.

The teams ended the first overtime tied at 67-67, then the Mustangs went up, 74-71, after Canon's free throw with 59 seconds remaining in the second OT. After Wily made a free throw nine ticks later, Brittney Fesolai tied it on a layup with 30 seconds left.

With about eight seconds left, Canon got the ball near the top of the key and wove her way through the lane. After glancing off a Kahuku defender, she put up the short jumper and it swished through the net.

"She's a great player, and that was a great shot," Red Raiders coach Val Anae said.

Wily, a senior point guard, finished with a game-high 29 points and added three rebounds. Teammate Camillaa Ah-Hoy contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Kalaheo wing Kendra Fischer scored 25 points, including 12 in the fourth period.

"She gave us a monster lift," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said.
