Abercrombie in the clear, panel finds

The Federal Election Commission has found that U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawai'i, did not accept illegal campaign contributions in 2004.
State Sen. Sam Slom, R-8th (Kahala, Hawai'i Kai), filed a complaint in October 2004 claiming Abercrombie accepted donations from people who had been fined or convicted of violating state campaign spending law.
The commission's general counsel found that Slom's complaint was speculative and "sets forth no facts and offers no specific information, however, that would support his allegations."
The commission closed the complaint in February. Slom said he thought his complaint was valid.
