Longtime Damien Memorial School co-athletic director Herb Lloyd is scheduled to be relieved of his duties at the end of May, according to Brother Greg O'Donnell, the school's president and CEO.

Lloyd, who has been at the school for 31 years, was told about a month ago by the administration he would not be offered a new one-year contract when his current one-year deal expires at the end of July, O'Donnell said.

"It's a business decision," said O'Donnell, who added that high school principal Michael Weaver and middle school principal Burton Tomita were involved in the decision. "It was in the best interests of the students."

Lloyd said yesterday he's still sorting out his situation. He declined to say why he was not offered a new contract.

"Right now, I'm not free to comment on what's going on," Lloyd said.

O'Donnell also declined to say why Lloyd was not offered a new contract. O'Donnell said Lloyd asked if he could teach at the school next year, but O'Donnell said no decision has been made.

Lloyd and Mike Normand are co-athletic directors at the school, O'Donnell said. A successor to Lloyd has not been discussed, O'Donnell said.

"When the end of the year comes, we will evaluate the position, and decide what we want to do with the position," O'Donnell said.
