Andy Irons advances in Australia

Three-time world champion surfer Andy Irons of Hawai'i won his third-round heat yesterday in the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks, Queensland, Australia.
Irons ousted South Africa's David Weare, 14.833-6.80.
Irons' brother, Bruce, was upset by Brazil's Raoni Monteiro, 14.33-14.17. Irons, who landed a huge aerial early in the heat to score a 9.0 out of 10, saw an early advantage disappear.
Meanwhile, just down the beach in the women's Roxy Pro, Hawai'i's Rochelle Ballard and Megan Abubo advanced to the quarterfinals, while Keala Kennelly was eliminated.
Ballard beat Australia's Claire Bevilacqua, 12.20-10.67, and Abubo ousted Australia's Jessi Miley-Dyer, 13.50-11.00. Australian Samantha Cornish defeated Kennelly, 12.77-10.67.
BASEBALL
HAWAI'I PACIFIC SWEEPS
Freshman Kevin Matsumoto pitched a seven-inning five-hitter and Colton Silva hit a three-run homer as Hawai'i Pacific beat Grand Canyon, 7-0, last night to complete a doubleheader sweep at Hans L'Orange Park.
Matsumoto struck out five and walked two for HPU (13-12). Grand Canyon fell to 8-13.
In the opener, Danny Lee and Tyler Jefferson each hit two-run singles to spice an eight-run fifth inning as HPU rallied from a 6-0 deficit to win, 8-6.
RAINBOWS LOSE RANKING
A 2-3 record in its First Hawai'i Title Rainbow Tournament cost the University of Hawai'i baseball team its first national ranking in seven years as it dropped out of the Collegiate Baseball newspaper Division I poll yesterday.
The Rainbows, who were No. 24 last week, had not been nationally ranked since Feb. 22 of 1999. UH is currently 13-6.
SOFTBALL
PENN STATE BEATS UH
Missy Beseres pitched a three-hitter as Penn State beat Hawai'i, 5-0, last night in a non-conference game at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Ashely Esparaza had four hits, including a solo homer, to lead Penn State (8-3).
Hawai'i (9-8) put its first two batters on in the third, and eventually loaded the bases but Beseres recorded one of her four strikeouts to end the inning.
Also yesterday, UH first baseman Tyleen Tausaga, who batted 4 for 9 with six RBIs in three games last week, was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
BYUH SPLITS TWINBILL
Rebecca Orosz singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Martin Methodist College (Pulaski, Tenn.), 8-7, yesterday in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader at BYUH Field.
Martin Methodist beat BYUH (5-7) in the second game, 7-2.
VOLLEYBALL
UH REMAINS NO. 4
The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team is fourth in the College Sports Television/American Volleyball Coaches Association poll for a third consecutive week.
UH (11-4) plays No. 7 UCLA (10-9) Friday and Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Brigham Young (14-2), UC Irvine (15-3) and Pepperdine (11-3) top the poll.
GOLF
UH'S GAMMIE IN THIRD
University of Hawai'i junior Dale Gammie shot a 2-over-par 74 yesterday and was in third place after the first round of the SJSU Spartan Invitational in San Jose, Calif.
San Francisco's Kristin Nichols leads with 71, followed by San Jose State's Erica Moston at 72.
San Francisco and San Jose State share the lead at 21-over 309. UH is tied for fourth at 316.
