Daughter’s fatal crash latest tragedy for Wai'anae woman

By Rod Ohira

Ernestine Ramos awoke early Saturday morning to every parent's worst nightmare.

"Her friends came by my window yelling, 'Mom, you gotta get up, Nani got into an accident,' " a sobbing Ramos said yesterday.

Ernestine "Nani" Ramos, who would have celebrated her 30th birthday yesterday, was pinned in a 1994 Honda Accord that crashed about 2 a.m. on Farrington Highway in Ma'ili as Ernestine Ramos and her son rushed to the accident scene from their Ala Akau home in Wai'anae.

Nani, the second youngest of seven children, was taken to Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and later medevaced in critical condition to The Queen's Medical Center, where she died at 7:42 a.m. Saturday. "She was the last one to leave," her mother said. "The helicopter had to come back to pick her up."

Injured in the crash were Ernestine Ramos' granddaughter, 20-year-old Charma Ramos; Charma's 7-month-old son, Dyson Moniz-Ramos; and Robert Castro, 22, whom Ernestine Ramos described as a good friend of the family. The car, which police said was being driven by Nani Ramos, belonged to Castro, Ernestine Ramos said.

"I don't know where they were going or who was the driver," Ernestine Ramos said.

"Nani was a good girl, someone who was always there for everybody," she added. "Maybe she did things sometimes that she not supposed to, but to me, she was always a good person."

The death of her daughter followed the Dec. 2 death of her husband, Ernest. "It's hard, very hard," said Ernestine Ramos, who also lost her son, Chandler, in January 2005. Another son died in 1997.

Nani Ramos was a certified nurse who was not employed at the time, her mother said.

Ernestine Ramos said her great-grandson, who was not in a child-safety seat and who was thrown from the car when it crashed, was expected to be released from the hospital today. Her granddaughter and Castro are "doing fine" but are still hospitalized, she said.

The medical examiner's office yesterday said Nani Ramos died of multiple internal injuries caused by the accident. Police vehicular homicide investigators were awaiting lab test results to determine if alcohol or drugs were contributing factors.

The speeding Honda veered out of control after missing a slight curve on Farrington Highway near Milikami Street, flipped onto its side and slid into a utility pole. The pole was severed into two pieces, one of which fell onto the car.

Services for Nani Ramos are pending.

She is survived by her mother; brothers Randy and Colby Ramos, and sisters Charmaine Olsen and Grayson Ramos.
