Pinch-hitter Bradley Boyer's two-out RBI triple snapped a 7-all game in the top of the ninth inning to lift Washington over Hawai'i, 8-7, in the last game of the First Hawai'i Title Rainbow Tournament last night at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Huskies (12-4, 3-2), who finished second in the tournament, squandered a 6-0 lead when UH tied the score at 7 in the bottom of the seventh to send the game — scheduled for seven innings — into extra innings.
The Rainbows (13-6, 2-3) finished third in the tournament.
Elliott Cribby (2-1) pitched five innings to get the win. Keahi Rawlins (0-1) took the loss despite a strong showing in 3 1/3 innings.
With one out in the ninth, Rawlins walked Matt Stevens and was relieved by Jeff Soskin. Soskin got pinch-hitter Jake Rife to ground out to first, with Stevens taking second. Boyer then tripled to center to score Stevens before Nick Burnham grounded out to end the inning.
Cribby set the Rainbows down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
A crowd of 2,205 — 1,017 of whom got in free as part of a promotion by attending the basketball game at the Stan Sheriff Center — attended yesterday's three games, including the UH doubleheader with UW because of Friday's rainout.
Hawai'i starter Mark Rodrigues was charged with six runs, but only one earned in a three-error first inning. He gave up four hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Ryan Anderson and Matt Hague hit back-to-back singles to start the UW first before advancing on a wild pitch. After Zach Clem walked to load the bases, Curt Rindal reached on an infield single to first that scored Anderson.
Rodrigues struck out the next two batters, but Joey Dunn reached on shortstop Nathan Young's two-base throwing error that allowed two more runs to score to make it 3-0. Young's second two-base throwing error off a grounder by Danny Cox scored two more runs and Burnham's RBI single made it 6-0 before Anderson grounded to short for a force at second to end the inning.
Hawai'i scored twice in the bottom of the first. Robbie Wilder led off with a single to short and took third on Jon Hee's wind-blown double to right. Justin Frash's sacrifice fly to left scored Wilder and Matt Inouye's double to left scored Hee.
The Rainbows closed to 6-5 in the fourth with three more runs. With one out, Young and Wilder were hit by pitches by Matt Kasser, who was lifted for Nick Haughian. Hee flied out to deep right to move Young to third. Frash then hit a pop behind shortstop for an RBI single that put runners at the corners. Inouye followed with an RBI single to center that moved Frash to third. Luis Avila pinch-hit for Kris Sanchez and delivered an RBI single to pull UH to 6-5 before Landon Hernandez grounded out to second to end the inning.
Young's third error of the game allowed Washington to score an unearned run in the fifth to make it 7-5. With one out, Stevens walked and took second on a wild pitch. After Dunn struck out, Cox walked. Burnham reached on Young's fielding error that allowed Stevens to score and Cox to take second before Anderson grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning.
The Rainbows tied the game with two in the bottom of the seventh. Hernandez reached on third baseman Stevens' throwing error and was lifted for pinch runner Matt Roquemore. Eli Christensen walked and both runners advanced on Derek DuPree's sacrifice.
Pinch-hitter Adam Roberts grounded a two-run single to center to tie the score at 7, then was lifted for pinch-runner Joe Spiers. Wilder grounded out, moving Spiers to second. Jon Hee then reached first on another throwing error by Stevens as Spiers took third. But Cribby struck out Frash to end send the game — which had been scheduled for seven innings — into extra innings.
HAWAI'I 10, WASHINGTON 8
Justin Frash hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to rally the Rainbows in a makeup of Friday night's rainout.
Darrell Fisherbaugh (2-0) gave up two runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief for Hawai'i. He gave up five hits and struck out two. The two runs came in the top of the ninth.
Freshman left-hander Tyler Cheney (1-1) was tagged for seven runs (six earned), 11 hits and a walk with two strikeouts in six-plus innings for UW.
Frash's homer off Cheney came after the Huskies had rallied from a 5-0 deficit to tie with five runs in the sixth and take a 6-5 lead on an RBI single in the seventh by Matt Lane. Lane's hit came against Fisherbaugh, who had come in with a runner on third and two outs following a triple by Curt Rindal off Matt Daly.
Hawai'i scored once in the first, then added four in the third, with Luis Avila (single), Matt Inouye (single), Jorge Franco (double) and Eli Christensen (single) driving in the runs.
The Huskies chased UH starter Ian Harrington in a five-run sixth, when they batted around, then moved ahead 6-5 in the seventh when Lane drove in Rindal, who had tripled.
But the lead was short-lived. Jon Hee led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and Frash took advantage of the wind blowing out to right with a two-run home run to put UH ahead, 7-6.
The Rainbows added three runs in the eighth, keyed by Inouye's two-run single.
ARKANSAS 7, TEXAS-ARLINGTON 1
Danny Hamblin continued his hot hitting, batting 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead the No. 11 Razorbacks (13-1), who won the tournament title with a 4-1 record. The Mavericks finished 4-11, 1-4.
Hamblin, who hit three home runs in the tournament, was the only one to post multiple hits in the Razorbacks' 10-hit assault.
Brian McLelland (1-0) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in a game that the Razorbacks staffed with six pitchers. McLelland allowed three hits and had three strikeouts.
The game was played during the morning because both teams had flights to catch last night.
