TEMPLE TOPS HILO, 3-2
Playing its first game in two weeks, the University of Hawai'i-Hilo baseball team found it difficult getting back into the rhythm in dropping a series-opening 3-2 decision to Temple yesterday at Wong Stadium.
The Vulcans (3-12) were held to four hits and stranded eight runners, five in the final two innings.
"We had no choice, we had nobody to play," UHH coach Joey Estrella said of his team's long layoff. "We were hoping to scrimmage and the weather wasn't conducive to scrimmage."
Tim Foulkrod pitched a three-hitter over six innings to help Temple (1-3) win its first game of the season. Eric Fritz allowed one hit over the final three innings for the save.
Hilo reliever Vinnie Biggs worked the last 4 2/3 innings, allowing two hits while striking out six and walking one.
Marc Wagner had two RBIs, one on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth that gave the Owls a 3-1 lead, and Frank Nunan added an RBI single.
Jimmy Crider had two hits and the lone RBI for Hilo, which filled the bases but couldn't score in the ninth.
"We're very pleased with our pitching," Estrella said. "It's just that we had opportunities to score runs and didn't do the kind of job that we can normally do."
