Advertiser Staff
Katie Rosentreter pitched a five-hitter as Mercer University (Macon, Ga.) defeated the University of Hawai'i, 2-0, last night in an opening round softball game of the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Rosentreter (4-4), a senior left-hander, struck out seven and walked three for the Bears (5-6).
Freshman right-hander Justine Smethurst (4-3) pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and one walk for UH (7-7).
Mercer scored an unearned run in the first because of a fielding error by shortstop Valana Manuma.
The Bears made it 2-0 in the sixth on Sarah Harding's RBI single to right field.
Hawai'i squandered an opportunity in the bottom of the first when it filled the bases with one out on two walks and Tyleen Tausaga's infield single. But Rosentreter struck out the next two batters.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
PENN RETURNING TO RING
Hilo's BJ Penn will make a much-anticipated return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship mixed martial arts organization tomorrow.
Penn will face Canada's Georges St. Pierre in a co-main event of the UFC 58: USA vs. Canada card at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
Penn, 27, was a UFC world champion in 2004, but left the organization over a contract dispute. He has fought in various other organizations over the past two years.
The contract dispute was recently settled out of court, and Penn is now under a new contract with the UFC.
The UFC is regarded as the top mixed martial arts organization in North America.
Penn, who is an expert in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, is 10-2-1.
St. Pierre is 11-1. Among St. Pierre's victories is a unanimous decision over Hawai'i fan favorite Jason "Mayhem" Miller.
However, St. Pierre's lone loss was to Matt Hughes of Illinois. Penn beat Hughes for the UFC world championship in 2004.
The card can be ordered through Oceanic digital pay-per-view.
The Eastside Grill on University Avenue will also televise the card. Admission is $5 (ages 21 and over only).
