State Library will open for sixth day

Beginning Monday, the state Library will be open six days a week — adding Monday to its current Tuesday-through-Saturday schedule.
Monday hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the same as Wednesday hours. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m on Tuesdays and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. It is closed Sundays.
State librarian Jo Ann Schindler announced the news to the Board of Education at its meeting yesterday, praising her librarians for making possible a sixth day of operations.
"We're very proud of the staff, and we know the public will be very appreciative," Schindler told the board.
Library hours and days of access have been a sore point for several years. With budget deficits and staff retirements and retention problems, libraries throughout the state have been forced to scale back operating hours.
Schindler also announced that the state library system continues to attract new employees, noting that it has reduced its job vacancies from a high of 135 in August 2004 to 85 as of the end of last month.
She said about 40 additional recruitments are in progress.
