Hawai'i was as different as day and night yesterday.

After playing their worst game of the season in the afternoon, the No. 24 Rainbows got a strong pitching performance from senior right-hander Justin Costi to beat Washington, 10-6, last night in the First Hawai'i Title Rainbow Tournament.

The Rainbows (12-4 overall, 1-1 in the tournament) snapped their first losing streak of the season after falling to Texas-Arlington, 15-9, in the afternoon in a makeup of Tuesday's rainout.

Perhaps it was a wakeup call.

"I can't say it will be good for us, but maybe in the long run it could be because it shows if we come out and put an effort like we did in the first game, we're going to get beat." said UH coach Mike Trapasso. "It also shows what a good club Texas-Arlington actually is. We came out the second game and had much more intensity and Costi really took control of the game."

The turnstile count for yesterday's three games was 915 at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Rainbows plays No. 11 Arkansas at 6:35 tonight. The Razorbacks will start sophomore sensation Nick Schmidt against UH ace Stephen Wright. The game will not be on TV or radio because of UH basketball.

Costi (1-0) had his longest stint of the season, going six innings, allowing a run on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Rich Olsen added two innings, allowing a run. Daniel Caldwell made his season debut, but could only get two outs in the ninth, giving up four runs. Jeff Soskin got the final out.

Freshman left-hander Adrian Gomez (0-1) was tagged for five runs, six hits and three walks with a strikeout in 3 2/3 innings for the Huskies (10-3, 1-1), who saw their five-game win streak snapped.

Freshman shortstop Nate Young led UH with three RBIs, going 2 for 3, the first hits of his collegiate career. The Rainbows had 15 hits.

Texas-Arlington 15, Hawai'i 9: In a game as ugly as the weather, the Mavericks (4-8 overall, 1-1 tournament) hammered the Rainbows (11-4, 0-1) for 21 hits.

Hawai'i's Luis Avila tied a tournament record by hitting two home runs, the third time it was done yesterday (see UTA-Arkansas game). He is the eighth player to accomplish the feat in the 31-year history of the tournament.

No. 11 Arkansas 12, Texas-Arlington 4: Senior right-hander Charley Boyce (1-0) won for the first time in four starts and Danny Hamblin drove in five runs and hit two home runs for the Razorbacks (10-1, 1-1 tournament). Adam Moore also hit two home runs for UTA.
