Baseball players from Hawai'i hit first homers

Three players from Hawai'i hit their first career collegiate home runs Saturday.
Long Beach State freshman catcher Kip Masuda, a 2005 Mid-Pacific graduate, hit a three-run home run in a five-run second inning of a 6-0 win against visiting Illinois-Chicago. Masuda was 2 for 4.
Creighton sophomore Michael Lam, a 2004 Punahou graduate, got a pinch-hit solo home run in the top of the ninth of a 9-5 win at Saint Louis.
Brigham Young freshman first baseman Kasey Ko, a 2005 Punahou graduate, hit a solo home run in a 10-5 win against Saint Mary's at the River City Classic in Sacramento, Calif. Ko was 2 for 4.

Washington State senior Zach McAngus (Kamehameha '02) hit a pinch-hit, three-run home run in the eighth inning as the Cougars beat San Francisco, 7-6, for the tournament championship Sunday in Sacramento, Calif. Washington State (10-2) trailed, 5-4, before McAngus homered for the second time in the tournament and season.
In Thursday's tournament opener, McAngus was 3 for 4, including a two-run home run with five RBIs in a 9-4 win against Portland. McAngus finished 4 for 12 with eight RBIs in the tournament.
Sacramento State senior outfielder Jim Strombach (Moanalua '02) batted 8 for 14 in four River City Classic games to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
SOFTBALL
Daniel hit a team-leading .467, going 7 of 15 in five games. She had two doubles, one triple and one home run for a .933 slugging percentage. She went 2 for 3 with a home run and tied a career-high with three RBIs in a 6-3 win over UTEP in the tournament opener. She then went 2 for 2 with a triple and an RBI in a 4-1 win over Purdue.
"What a weekend for Kimi," first-year head coach Amy Hayes said on the team's Web site. "She came up in key situations and continually came through for us.
"The other thing you don't hear about is her effort in the outfield. From left she threw out a couple of runners tying to stretch singles into doubles and that's a play that can really lift your defense's spirits."
She went 2 for 3, including a two-run single in the second inning and another RBI single in the fourth to score senior first baseman Ianeta Le'i (Iolani '02), who reached on an error to lead off the inning.

Lee and senior guard Shannon Riley (Maryknoll '02) were named to the all-conference team.
Lee scored 27 points in a 65-53 win over Holy Names Saturday to help the Oaks capture the postseason tournament title and automatic bid into the NAIA Division II National Championships.
Menlo will make its first national tournament appearance since 2000. The 32-team, single-elimination Division II championships will be held March 8 to 14 in Sioux City, Iowa.
Shim had nine points, four rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Freshman guard Cheryl Lee (Maryknoll '05) had eight points and two rebounds, and junior forward Caroline Beddow (Mid-Pacific '03) had five points and three rebounds.

SWIMMING
Occidental placed third in the 400 freestyle (3:13.35) and 400 medley (3:34.35), and fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:29.77) and 800 freestyle (7:18.17).
Individually, Sutton was fifth in the 200 freestyle (1:47.38), ninth in the 100 freestyle (48.51) and 16th in the 500 freestyle (5:06.42).
Oxy freshman Santosh "Toshi" Baker (King Kekaulike '05 of Makawao) was seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:03:46) and ninth in the 200 backstroke (2:03:64).
Oxy sophomore Sara Ajifu (Iolani of Kane'ohe) was 14th in the 100 freestyle (56.49) and the 50 freestyle (26.36), and her relay teams were third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:40.64) and fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.77).
Redlands senior Mari Chang (Punahou of Honolulu) was 13th in the 200 butterfly (2:27.71).
