Bank of the Orient, which has two branches on O'ahu, is contacting customers about potential identity theft after magnetic tapes containing personal information on 28,000 customers were stolen last month from one of its California locations.
Bank spokesman Scott Bender said there haven't been any reports of customers having problems and that the tapes were encrypted, requiring special equipment, passwords and software to open. In notifying customers, the bank is offering customers a one-year subscription to a credit monitoring service for free, Bender said.
