Rainbows recruit signs with Rangers for $100,000

Hawai'i recruit Matt Jaimes said he has signed a $100,000 bonus with the Texas Rangers, who drafted him in the 12th round in last week's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

"I'm excited and ready to start my pro career," said Jaimes in a telephone interview.

He was drafted as a third baseman, but recruited to play the outfield and pitch for UH.

He reports to rookie camp in Surprise, Ariz., on June 27, he said.

Jaimes was the only UH recruit to get drafted. Barring unforeseen issues, the other eight November signees are expected to join the Rainbows next season.

Meanwhile, UH senior outfielder Matt Inouye said he leaves Wednesday for Bristol, Va., home of the Chicago White Sox's rookie team in the Appalachian League. Although he was primarily an outfielder in his four-year career with the Rainbows, he was drafted as a catcher in the 21st round by the White Sox.

"This is the first time I'm going through this, so I don't know what to expect," said Inouye, who also was drafted out of Mid-Pacific Institute in 2002 by the Boston Red Sox.

Joining Inouye in Bristol will be Maui's Kanekoa Texeira, who was picked in the 22nd round by the White Sox out of Saddleback Community College in California. The right-handed pitcher was originally signed by UH out of Kamehameha in 2004, but opted to play at the JC. Texeira also was drafted out of high school. Milwaukee picked him in the 31st round in 2004.

"I've decided to take my chances and play minor league ball," Texeira said. "I feel kind of relieved, but I know it gets harder and harder as you move on."

He said he got a $15,000 signing bonus.
