Show interviewer your skills — and try to relax

By Michael Crom

Q. I haven't been on an interview in ages and have several coming up. Do you have any tips on how I can show my interviewer I can be an asset to their company?

A. Congratulations on getting those interviews. The company feels you are qualified and would like to see if you are a fit in their corporate environment. Here are some things to remember during an interview:

1. Show you are assertive. Interviewers want potential candidates who are assertive because they believe they will be able to tackle projects and solve problems. Give examples of how you overcame obstacles at your present or past jobs.

2. Voice your skills. Your skills on paper are what got you through the door. Now is the time to show you have all these skills and are capable of learning things quickly.

3. Listen. Your interviewer will be telling you about the job and the corporate atmosphere so listen attentively to show that you are interested.

4. Ask questions. Interviewers want to know you are inquisitive and not afraid to ask.

5. Relax. Before the interview actually begins, make a little small talk with the interviewer to put yourself at ease.
