CORVALLIS, Ore. — Hawai'i right-handed pitcher Steven Wright was diagnosed with mononucleosis, UH coach Mike Trapasso said yesterday.

Wright will not pitch in the remaining games of the regional. Doctors said he would be out three to four weeks, according to Trapasso.

"I feel bad for Steven because of the year he's had until now and all the work he's done," Trapasso said.

Wright was the Western Athletic Conference pitcher of the year and an All-America third team pick.

Because the 25-player rosters are set before the regional, he cannot be replaced. If UH advances to the Super Regionals and Wright is still unavailable, he could be replaced then, Trapasso said.

Wright was scheduled to start the regional opener against Kansas on Friday, but was scratched and replaced by Justin Costi. The Rainbows lost to the Jayhawks, 9-6.

CHRISTENSEN AILING

Shortstop Eli Christensen injured his right (throwing) elbow during pregame of Friday's game. He did not start yesterday and was replaced by freshman Nathan Young. Christensen's status is day-to-day.

"He woke up this morning and it was really sore," Trapaso said. "He could swing a bat, but he was really favoring it."
