Kamehameha senior chosen as Most Valuable

Advertiser Staff

Selected by the Hawai'i State Cheer Coaches Association

Kamehameha School's Alyssa Kong was chosen the Most Valuable Cheerleader on the 2006 All-State Cheerleading team.

Kong heads a list of 15 first-team stars who were selected by the Hawai'i State Cheer Coaches Association.

The team members were selected from a live tryout in front of selected panel of judges, as well as spectators.

In past years, selections were based on videotapes.

More than 70 participants from various schools and leagues competed. They were judged in jumps, chants/cheers, dance (females only), tumbling and stunting.

Kong and Chantel Coloma of Leilehua both received outstanding senior scholarship awards worth $1,000. Kong was named Outstanding Athlete and Coloma was the Scholar Athlete.

They earned recognition for their athletic and academic achievements.

Baldwin's Joann Yapp was voted Veteran Coach of the Year and Kamehameha-Hawai'i's Dawna Chai was picked as Rookie Coach of the Year.

'Aiea received the Sportsmanship Award.

Kamehameha, which won the large division Hawai'i High School Athletic Association title, placed six players on the first team.

Joining Kong (flyer) on the first team for Kamehameha were Corinne Chun (base), Elisabeth Jones (back), Kawena Vierra (flyer), Keenyn Won (base) and Tamara Patton (base).

Mililani placed four players — Chelsea Villamor (base), Jaime Tenorio (back), Lauryn Nakasone (base) and Mishon Kawaguchi (flyer) — on the first team.

Punahou placed two — Annalise Miyashiro and Cheyeanne Loughlin.

The HSCCA was formed in 2002.
