Hawai'i second in boys' Jr. America's Cup golf

San Diego rallied from three strokes back to beat Hawai'i by a stroke in the final round of the Junior America's Cup at Ogden Golf and Country Club in Utah.
San Diego golfers Alex Grieb (73) and Alejandro Escobedo (70) and Sam Chien (70) combined for a team total of 213. The finished with a three-round 641.
Hawai'i's Chan Kim (70), Alex Ching (75) and Sean Maekawa (72) scored a 217—642. T.J. Kua shot a 79. The lowest three scores count toward the team score.
British Columbia finished third at 645, followed by Northern California (646) and Utah (650).
Sixteen teams from the United States, Canada and Mexico were in the tournament.

ISLE GIRLS FINISH THIRD
Hawai'i finished third with a three-day total of 567 at Oro Valley Country Club in Arizona. Southern California won the team title with a 552.
The Hawai'i golfers were Mike Ueoka (186 over three rounds), Kristina Merkle (189), Kaitlen Miyajima (194) and Katie Sisler (203).
The final round was shortened to nine holes because of thunderstorms.
KONO FINISHES T18
Honolulu's Stephanie Kono shot an 9-over-par 80 yesterday and finished tied for 18th at the McDonald's Betsy Rawls Girls Championships at Malvern, Pa.
Marika Lendl of Goshen, Conn., shot a 68 to finish at 209, five strokes ahead of three golfers who were tied for second. She is the daughter of tennis great Ivan Lendl.
Kono, a junior at Punahou Schools, finished at 225 at the White Manor Country Club.
Elyse Okada of Kahului, Maui, shot a 76 and finished tied for 33rd at 229. Kimberly Kim, formerly of Pahoa, Hawai'i was tied for 43rd after a 74—231.
The tournament was conducted by the American Junior Golf Association.
FUJIKAWA TIED FOR 21ST
Tadd Fujikawa shot a third-round 1-over-par 73 and was tied for 21st at the HP Boys Junior Championship yesterday in Orlando, Fla.
Ricky Fowler of Murrieta, Calif., (66) and Peter Uihlein (70) of Bradenton, Fla., were tied for the lead at 211. Fujikawa, a Moanalua sophomore, was at 220.
The final round of the AJGA tournament will be played today at the Arnold Palmer's Ball Hill Club & Lodge course.
Fujikawa, Kono and Kimberly Kim are scheduled to play in the Canon Cup at Lake Forest, Ill., starting Monday.
The Canon Cup invites 20 junior golfers to compete in a Ryder Cup-type format with 10 golfers representing the western United States playing against 10 from the eastern U.S.

OHNO TO BE HONORED
Apolo Anton Ohno, a five-time Olympic medalist in short track speedskating is making his first visit to Hawai'i this weekend to accept a Victor Award for his athletic accomplishments.
Ohno won three medals in February in Turin, Italy, including a gold in the 500 meters.
He will be given the key to the city by Mayor Mufi Hannemann and today will be declared Apolo Anton Ohno Day by Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona.
Ohno also is in town to promote his store, www.apoloantonohno.com.
The Victor Awards will be televised next month on Fox Sports Net West.

HERRING BIG IN WIN
Kamehameha junior Kanani Herring had seven kills and two aces to help the U.S. Girls' Youth National Team defeat Puerto Rico, 25-13, 25-14, 25-12, last night at the NORCECA Girls' Youth Continental Championship in Gainesville, Fla.
The Dominican Republic and the U.S. share the tournament lead at 3-0, with Canada third at 2-1.
"It really was an awesome performance by our team today in every aspect of the game," Team USA coach Shelton Collier said. "We really stepped it up several levels tonight, which was great to see."
The U.S. held a 46-20 advantage in kills and a 28-17 dig advantage, with Hawai'i's Sydney Yogi getting nine. The U.S., which had 10 players score and 11 enter the match, did not allow a Puerto Rico ace. Team USA limited Puerto Rico 12 percent hitting.
The U.S. faces Canada tonight. Final matches Sunday will determine tournament rankings. The tournament winner and runnerup qualify for the 2007 FIVB Girls' Youth World Championship (18-under) held at Mexicali and Tijuana, Mexico.
YOUTH BASEBALL
MILILANI 11-12 TEAM FALLS
Mililani lost its opening game at the P.O.N.Y. Bronco (ages 11-12) West Zone Regional at Whittier, Calif., yesterday to Los Altos/Mountain View (Calif.), 5-3.
Mililani reliever Cyrus Ah-Quin struck out 10 in four innings.
Mililani will play tomorrow at 6 a.m. (Hawai'i time) against the loser of North Seattle-West Hills (Calif.).
MILILANI 9-10 TEAM BEAT
Mililani dropped a 5-0 decision to Fountain Valley, Calif., in its opening game yesterday in the P.O.N.Y. Mustang (ages 9-10) West Zone Regional at Chino Hills (Calif.) Park.
Mililani starting pitcher Khade Paris struck out seven.
Fountain Valley scored four runs in the first inning.
Mililani will face Blossom Valley, Calif., today at 2 p.m., Hawai'i time, in a loser-out contest.

SANTIAGOS SHINE AT MEET
Brother and sister Scott and Taisha Santiago, of Hau'ula, placed in the top seven of their divisions at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Hughes Stadium at Morgan State University in Baltimore.
Scott Jr., 10, finished fifth in the triathlon in the bantam boys division (born in 1996 or later) on Wednesday. Scott completed the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 12.94 seconds, threw the shot put in 7.78 meters (25.7 feet) and high jumped 1.25 meters (4.1 feet).
Taisha, 14, finished seventh in the youth girls (born 1992 to 1993) discus throw with a throw of 31.18 meters (102.9 feet).
The Santiagos compete for Hau'ula Track Club.
