AUG. 4: CONCERT

Hot salsa will spice up the next First Friday gallery walk downtown as Rolando Sanchez, below, and Salsa Hawaii perform in a concert titled "Try to Sit Still!" Singer/songwriter/percussionist Sanchez is a longtime purveyor of fiery Latin/jazz/salsa. Tickets are $22.50.

PLANT SALE: AUG. 5

Workshops and classes, tours and a free mulch giveaway (bring your own bags, please) — all with the aim of conserving water through careful landscaping — are part of the 18th annual Open House and Unthirsty Plant Sale at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden, right. Drought-tolerant and native Hawaiian plants will be sold by the Friends of the Halawa Xeriscape Garden and local nurseries and growers. Admission is free.

FESTIVAL: AUG. 13

The very first Hawaii Kai Family Fest features entertainment by The Surfaris (remember the 1960s hit "Wipe Out"?) and guests Kutmaster Spaz and slam poet Kua'ana Kekuewa. Other attractions include food, contests, prizes and keiki ID. Admission is free, and there's a free shuttle at the nearby Kiss 'n Ride lot. The festival is sponsored by New Hope Hawaii Kai.

CONCERT: AUG. 15

The always popular Makaha Sons will close the Bishop Museum's Moonlight Mele on the Lawn concert series. The trio — below, from left, John Koko, Louis "Moon" Kauakahi and Jerome Koko — celebrates its 30th anniversary of merry music making this year. Tickets are $15 general, $10 for Bishop Museum members and Bank of Hawaii customers and employees, $5 for children 4-12.

FESTIVAL: AUG. 18-20

Get a head start on Christmas shopping this year at the 2006 Made in Hawaii Festival. All manner of Island-made products — art, fashions, crafts, jewelry, home furnishings and produce — will be showcased. Highlights include cooking demonstrations, food samples and local entertainment. Admission is $3 general and free for 6 and younger.

So it hasn't even been close to 10,000 days since rock band Tool was last here in 2001 — it's been 1,700-plus days, in case you're counting, but the guys are finally coming back. The group, which first achieved fame through the album "Undertow," most recently released "10,000 Days," which spawned the hit single "Vicarious." Tickets are $68.50, and tickets are going fast.

Hula and Hawaiian music once again take the spotlight at the 29th annual Ho'ike presented by kumu Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett and his halau. Jerry Santos and friends, Sean Na'auao and Natalie Ai Kamau'u are among the scheduled performers in addition to the hula troupe. Tickets are $20.

Hey, haven't we seen these guys before? Yes, The All-American Rejects, last here in January, are heading our way again, and a second show has been announced (tickets go on sale tomorrow for that one). After the band's self-titled debut disc in 2002, the indie-rock quartet from Oklahoma followed up with the chart-topping album "Move Along" — and the hot single "Dirty Little Secret" — in 2005. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $24 general and $50 VIP.

CONCERTS: AUG. 25-26

Honolulu Broadway Babies presents the benefit concert "Broadway Mixed Plate 2006: Fresh Off the Boat." The star-studded roster of performers includes Broadway and musical headliners from New York, Los Angeles and the Philippines. Local artists in the entertainment lineup include Mihana Souza, right, and Kristian Lei. Tickets are $27, $47, $57 and $67.

CONCERT: AUG. 25

Indie rock band She Wants Revenge, right, led by Justin Warfield and Adam "Adam 12" Bravin, makes its Hawai'i debut. The Los Angeles band claims influences that range from Fellini and Jarmusch to Tangerine Dream and Morrissey, from Echo and the Bunnymen to Beethoven and Coltrane — according to its MySpace page, anyway (www.myspace.com/shewantsrevenge). Revenge made a splash after much radio airplay in SoCal; its self-titled CD was released in January. Opening band is Linus. Tickets are $20 for this all-ages show.

STAGE: AUG. 25-SEPT. 23

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, Honolulu Theatre for Youth opened up its 52nd season with the classic fairy tale "Snow White." The HTY version features comedy, original music, dance and one actor appearing as all seven dwarves for a different twist on this familiar story about a princess and her wicked stepmother. Tickets are $16 general and $8 youths and seniors.
