Scott Ashworth was promoted from head pro to Director of Golf at Ka'anapali Golf Courses on July 1. The property is in the process of a three-year, $13 million renovation. The clubhouse and South Course re-opened last fall and the North is closed until mid-November for renovation.

Last year, Billy Casper Golf Management Company, which owns/operates more than 60 golf courses across the country, named Ashworth "Head Golf Professional of the Year." In addition to golf operations supervision, Ashworth's management duties will expand to include merchandising, sales and marketing, budgeting and agronomics. He will assist PGA general manager Ed Kageyama.

Ashworth came to Ka'anapali from Marriott properties in Florida, Washington and Ko Olina. He also supervised the University of Washington golf driving range while studying political science for his undergraduate degree.

CHARITIES BENEFIT

February's inaugural Fields Open in Hawai'i, at Ko Olina, raised $83,000 for local charities. Donations were made through Friends of Hawai'i Charities.

Among groups receiving proceeds are Wai'anae Coast Community Mental Health Center, Special Olympics Hawai'i, Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, Children's Discovery Center, Nanakuli High and Intermediate, Nanakuli Housing Corporation, The First Tee (O'ahu) and Parents and Children Together (PATCH).

Through the Fields Open's partnership with Ko Olina Charities, a $20,000 donation was also made to Girl Scout Council of Hawai'i.

The 2007 Fields Open will be Feb. 22 to 24 at Ko Olina. It follows the LPGA's first full-field event of the season, the SBS Open at Turtle Bay.

RARICK EVENT A SUCCESS

A dozen champions were crowned Sunday at the 15th annual Cindy Rarick Junior Golf Invitational at Waikoloa's Kings' Course.

Rarick, a five-time winner on the LPGA Tour, has represented Waikoloa for several years. She hosts the annual tournament to help develop skills of junior golfers statewide. It is sponsored by Big Island Junior Golf.

"Hawai'i's junior-age golfers are showing how good they are on the national scene and it's because of pros like Cindy Rarick sharing their knowledge and events like this tournament that are helping them to continually improve and develop their skills," said David Pritchett, director of golf for Waikoloa Beach & Golf Resort.

Waikoloa's Junior Golf Program runs through Nov. 30 and is open to kids ages 6 to 17 of all skill levels. The one-time registration fee is $150. Benefits include free skills clinics taught by Waikoloa pros in the summer, unlimited access to practice facilities, free play when accompanied by a paying adult, participation in Waikoloa junior golf tournaments and membership in the Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association.
