TUBE WATCH: Three Island talents are in the cast for the fall season of "Hi-5," a children's television show on The Learning Channel. Joining the lineup are Yasmeen Sulieman, 1998 Brown Bags to Stardom winner and still a budding recording artist, and her brother J. Sterling Sulieman, a 2001 Brown Bags winner who just graduated from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. Kim-E Balmilero, a local girl, has already been with the show a couple of seasons.

Yasmeen played Chiffon in a tour of "Little Shop of Horrors" (with "Rent" star Anthony Rapp as Seymour) and Sterling has been doing voiceovers for the Disney Channel. "Hi-5" has Australian origins, so the Suliemans will be taping Down Under, though live shows geared to the wee set are also slated for Canada and some U.S. cities. ...

CALENDAR CUES: Tickets to Augie T's "Then and Now" concert, at 8 p.m. Aug. 15 at Farrington High's auditorium (his alma mater), are $20, on sale at Local Motion stores. The performance will be taped for a future DVD release, and Augie's going full force with the hoopla, planning a Hollywood-type to-do with searchlights, some paparazzi, and even a few tuxedoed types walking the red carpet before the show begins — all with a local slant, natch. Part of the proceeds will go to the Speak the Dream Foundation to establish college scholarships for kids who likely wouldn't have access to such help. While he was a student, Augie was dyslexic, so he wants to give back to the community, now that he's hip and happening. Call 255-9343 or visit www.augietulba.com ...

Auntie Edith Leong — an 80-plus dynamo — no sooner finished heading up the Spam musubi committee for the First Hawaiian Bank REHAB Golf Tournament (a record $250,000 was raised!), than she turned her zeal to Saint Louis School. She's putting the call out to alumni to celebrate "Coming Home" on Aug. 13, to meet and greet the new president, former Judge Walter Kirimitsu. Auntie Edith is overseeing the food, making stew and rice, turkey sandwiches, kim chee and other goodies. Lillian Langeslay at 739-4862 for more details. ...

SHOW BITS: "Into the Woods," playing to sold-out audiences at Diamond Head Theatre, is rich with nuanced performances. As the Baker and the Baker's Wife, Scott Moura and Zenia Zambrano Moura bring their real-life marriage to the spotlight as the cursed fairy tale couple — with appealing, genuine bonding. As Jack (of beanstalk fame), Joseph Morales enriches the cast with a resourceful, involving presence, and Nataysha Ann Echevarria as Little Red Riding Hood is a star in the making. Allyson Paris as the Witch is bewitching, bewildering and beholding, and Jimi V. Wheeler makes a charmingly loathsome prince and wolf. The Stephen Sondheim romp is long in playing time with demanding lyrics that aren't consistently audible, but there are scads of tidbits to keep you interested till the final bow. ...

On the other hand, the Hawai'i Opera Theatre's "The King and I," with Richard Chamberlain as the king and Jan Maxwell as the school teacher Anna, has a tough go at Blaisdell Concert Hall. The leads are regal and feisty enough, but an unstated vacuum prevents potential sparks from flying; you wind up hoping for an exhilarating "wow" moment that doesn't happen. ...

The homegrown stars (Jordan Segundo as Lun Tha, Kristian Lei as Tuptim) are likeable and delightful as the doomed young romantics, and the kiddies are adorable. The aforementioned Kristian Lei will unveil her "Broadway Mixed Plate 2006: Fresh Off the Boat," at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 25 and 26 at the Hawai'i Theatre. Mihana Souza and Jordan Segundo and other show-biz peers who've appeared in "The Lion King," "Les Miserables," "Miss Saigon" and "Beauty and the Beast" will perform. Tickets are $27 to $67, on sale at the box office or online at hawaiitheatre.com ...
