While the state's 251 public schools are supposed to open Thursday under a unified school calendar mandated by the Legislature, schools still have the option of planning teacher training days, professional development days or orientation days before classes officially begin.
As a result, schools will welcome their first students Thursday, Friday, Monday or even later.

As of yesterday, here are how many schools are opening on each day:
Before the statewide conversion to a single calendar, almost two-thirds of all public schools had already adopted this year-round version commonly referred to as the "1-3-2" model.
Among the 27 public charter schools, most chose to follow the new DOE calendar, with only a few remaining on a more traditional schedule.
The school year already began in late June or early July for four multitrack schools.
The state has approximately 180,000 public school students.
