Vintage films at Kapolei Library

"Movies Under the Stars at Kapolei Library," a four-part monthly film series hosted by film historian Steven Fredrick, begins Wednesday at the library.

The new program was created after a well-attended World War II film program in May, narrated by Fredrick, a collector of vintage Hawaiian-themed movies.

Kiewit Building Group Inc. is cooperating with the library to present the series.

The schedule:

  • Wednesday — "Old Time Surf-Fest: Vintage Hawaiian Surfing Films," with footage shot between the 1930s and '70s along the North Shore, in Waikiki and off Santa Monica, Calif. Duke Kahanamoku and 22 North Shore surfers brave the winter waves of Pipeline and Sunset.

  • Aug. 16 — "Toontown Hawai'i: A Collection of Hawaiian-Theme Cartoons."

  • Sept. 20 — "The Big Band Music of Hawai'i."

  • Oct. 25 — "It's Alive: The Return of Classic Monsters of Filmland."

Those attending should bring blankets or mats, along with snacks, for lawn seating at 6:30 p.m. Movies will be shown at sunset, about 7 p.m.

Admission is free. The library is at 1020 Manawai St. in Kapolei. Information: 693-7050.
