Kaua'i golfer Casey Watabu won two matches yesterday to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Bremerton, Wash.

Watabu, 22, of Kapa'a, defeated Jesse Schutte of Florence, Ore., 3 and 2 in the second round and Joseph Prince of Chula Vista, Calif., 3 and 2, in the round of 16.

Daniel Im, of Fullerton, Calif., defeated Jeff Daniels, of Harrisburg, Pa., with a birdie on the 19th hole in the round of 16 and will face Watabu in the quarterfinals.

The semifinals also will be played today. The 36-hole final is tomorrow at the Gold Mountain Golf Club.

KANEKO TRAILS BY ONE ENTERING FINAL ROUND

Honolulu's Ayaka Kaneko shot a 2-under-par 72 yesterday and was one shot behind leader Mika Miyazato of Japan, entering the final round of girls 15-17 division of the Callaway Golf Junior World Championship in La Jolla, Calif.

Kaneko, a 16-year-old Sacred Hearts student, is one of several Hawai'i youths in the championships being played on courses in the San Diego area.

Miyazato, shot a 74 yesterday at the Torrey Pines North Course and was at 212.

Thomas Robertson, of Pukalani, Maui, shot an 9-over 80—223 at the Torrey Pines South Course and was tied for 19th in the boys 15-17 division. Matthew Giles (69) of Australia leads after three rounds at 208.

Other age divisions finished their tournaments yesterday. Here are the Hawai'i golfers who made the cut:

In the boys 13-14 at Riverwalk Golf Club, Presidio/Mission Course (par 71), Kane'ohe's Alika Beall tied for 11th (79—217) and Honolulu's Bradley Shigezawa tied for 14th (72—218).

In the girls 13-14 at Sycuan Resort, Oak Glen (par 71), Hilo's Summer Mizusawa tied for 17th (74—228) and Honolulu's Hayley Young was 32nd (85—237).

In the boys 11-12 at Cottonwood at Ranch San Diego, Ivanhoe Course (par 73), Honolulu's Lorens Chan was fifth (68—214).

In the girls 11-12 at Cottonwood, Wailuku's Kyung Kim was seventh (78—222).

In the boys 9-10 at Welk Resort San Diego Fountains Executive Course (par 72), Honolulu's Richard Hattori finished tied for 10th (65—191) and Honolulu's Skye Inakoshi was tied for 21st (67—194).

In the girls 7-8 at Sycuan Resort, Pine Glen course (par 58), Kapolei's Allisen Corpuz finished second (58—185).

In the boys 6-under at Colina Park Golf Course (par 53), Kailua's Kai Samiere was tied for 28th (64—203).

YACHTING

LIGHTNING, CONTESSA LEAD IN PACIFIC CUP

Lightning, a 53-foot yacht, yesterday continued to lead the West Marine Pacific Cup from San Francisco to Kane'ohe.

The Contessa, a 52.5-foot yacht, also is contention.

Lightning leads in Division E, while Contessa leads the double-handed fleet.

Other leaders are California Girl (Division A), Tutto Bene (Division B), ET (Division C) and Recidivist (Division D).

The first finishers are expected tomorrow or Sunday.

BOXING

LOO ADVANCES TO FINAL

Mililani's Colleen Loo decisioned Rochelle Gilken of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., 3-2, yesterday in the 106-pound division to advance to tomorrow's final of the Women's Golden Gloves National Tournament in Hollywood, Fla.
