TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Gilmore Girls," 7 p.m., WB. Paris is on a rampage at the college newspaper and everyone else has quit. Rory may or may not come to the rescue. Back home, Lorelai is still bitter that Luke didn't tell her when he learned he had a daughter. Their wedding is on hold. At this precarious time, the family revives the custom of Friday-night dinner with Lorelai's parents, who also don't know that Rory's long-absent father is suddenly paying her tuition. The result is noisy, hectic and funny. It's a reminder of how clever "Gilmore Girls" can be.

TONIGHT'S SHOULD-SEE

State of the Union address, 4 p.m., ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC. George W. Bush delivers his annual address before a joint session of Congress and the networks will likely stick around for the Democratic response and for commentary.

OF NOTE

"American Idol," 7 p.m., Fox. Tonight, we see the Las Vegas auditions. Unlike the previous Tuesdays, this will be confined to an hour, making room for the State of the Union address. Let's hope Simon Cowell is off of the goofy tangent he showed last week in San Francisco.

"Fear Factor," 7 p.m., NBC. Mother-son duos compete. That includes a romp in a kitchen, with snakes and such.

"According to Jim," 7 p.m., ABC. Jim claims he's going to do a 10-kilometer run — then starts to look for a way to avoid it.

"When Strangers Appear" (2001), 7 p.m., Lifetime. Rahda Mitchell stars as a young woman who has a diner near an abandoned highway. A man arrives, saying he's being chased. Then others arrive with a different story. Barry Watson and Kevin Anderson co-star.

"Independent Lens: Parliament Funkadelic," 10:30 p.m., PBS. This documentary looks at George Clinton and his offbeat, funky music.
