New Frontier plans include Ferris wheel
No official announcement has been made, but the redevelopment of the Strip's New Frontier hotel-casino is in the works. Plans submitted at a recent Clark County Planning Commission meeting detail a 62-story hotel tower, casino, performing-arts theater and Ferris wheel planned to replace the aging resort. The wheel, an observation type similar to the London Eye, would hold 32 capsules that can carry 25 passengers each. The existing New Frontier wouldn't close till sometime next year, with a projected reopening in 2009 or 2010.
'HAIRSPRAY' DEAL: Previews of "Hairspray," the latest Broadway show to hit the Strip, will run at the Luxor Feb. 6-14 at $58. Full-price shows begin Feb. 17, with tickets at $74.50 and $96.50.
Q. What's the status of this year's Super Bowl parties in Las Vegas?
A. Dicey, since the NFL put its foot down on casinos exploiting its brand in 2004. Not allowed are casino big-screen (larger than 55 inches) broadcasts and fee-charging parties. As a result, no one is officially hosting a Super Bowl party. However, the game will be on every screen in every sports book in town, most with accompanying food and drink specials. These nonparties are being advertised in mailers and signs that refer only to the "Big Game."
