Crunch time has arrived in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division boys basketball, and Kaimuki showed up at just the right moment last night.

The visiting Bulldogs rallied from an 11-point fourth-period deficit to hand Moanalua its first East loss, 65-62. Kaimuki, ranked No. 10 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 6-1 in the East; Na Menehune fell to 6-1.

The Bulldogs suffered their first defeat, 61-59 to Castle, on Saturday. They face No. 3 Kahuku (7-0) tomorrow. Moanalua plays Castle (3-4) tomorrow, Kalaheo (4-2) on Monday and Kahuku next Thursday.

"This is a big win, because all of the top teams will be playing each other (in the next week)," Kaimuki coach Kelly Grant said.

The Bulldogs survived last night only after rallying from a 53-42 deficit with 6:10 remaining. Beau Albrechtson, a 6-foot-4 junior forward, scored 13 of his game-high 27 points during the comeback, which also got a boost from a full-court press that forced several turnovers.

Kaimuki finally took the lead at 61-59 with 2:13 left after Albrechtson's three-point play and eventually built the lead to 65-59 with 14 seconds remaining after two free throws by Jarrett Shiu.

Moanalua's Stevie Austin swished a 3-pointer with about two ticks left and the Bulldogs were able to run out the clock.

"I think no matter how much we're down, we can catch up," said Albrechtson, who scored most of his field goals on layups and added 11 free throws in 13 attempts. "It comes down to heart and wanting it more, and that's what we showed at the end."

Kaimuki started the game hot, jumping to leads of 6-0 and 10-3 in the first five minutes. But Na Menehune got hot themselves, sinking a staggering eight 3-pointers in the first half to take a 29-27 lead into the break.

"Moanalua is a strong team and they had the momentum," Albrechtson said. "But at halftime our coach was telling us we need to want it more than them."

Na Menehune stayed hot in the second half, swishing three more 3-pointers in the third period to take a 47-38 lead into the fourth. Five different Moanalua players made 3-pointers, led by Wayne West's four and Bao Jun Lei's three. Austin and Chris Holt each added two, and Jay Yoshizawa had one.

"That's our game," Na Menehune coach Dan Hale said. "We're small, so we press (on defense) and we shoot. But we didn't finish our plays at the end, and that was the difference. Give Kaimuki all the credit, because they're a good team all-around and they hustle and make free throws. They didn't get down mentally, and they kept coming back and coming back."

Grant said Moanalua's hot shooting resembled Castle's, but this time the Bulldogs eventually withstood the barrage.

"The difference was this time we went with a quicker lineup in the second half," Grant said. "Their offense is all jump shots, so we needed guys in there who could move and get out there on them."
