Ex-champs prevail at Waikoloa

Defending champions Paul Goldstein and Marie Eve Pelletier won their opening matches of the Hilton Waikoloa USTA Challenger yesterday on the Big Island.
Goldstein, who also won the event in 2000, defeated fellow Todd Widom, 6-3, 6-1. Goldstein, the top seed, is currently ranked No. 67 in the ATP Entry Ranking.
Pelletier, the No. 2 seed from Canada, outlasted Nika Ozegovic of Croatia, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-2 in 2 1/2 hours.
Top-seeded Edina Gallovits of Romania defeated Ye Ra Lee of Korea, 6-7 (2), 7-5, 6-4.
Competition continues this morning at 10.

LAJOLA OUSTED FROM AUSTRALIAN OPEN
Hawai'i's Dennis Lajola won his first two singles matches in three sets, but fell to Estonia's Jaak Poldma in the third round of the Junior Boys draw at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Lajola beat Jiri Kosler of the Czech Republic, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, in the opening round. Lajola then ousted Australia's Steven Goh, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
But Poldma took the 'Aiea 16-year-old out, 6-3, 6-3. Lajola got just over half his first serves in, and won only 28 percent of the points on his second serve.
Lajola and partner Christian Vitulli upset the third-seeded Croatian team to reach the quarterfinals in doubles, where they fell, 6-1, 6-4, to Kei Nishikori of Japan and Peter Polansky of Canada.
