Oda and Moxley win first

Malino Oda, a former No. 1 player at the University of Hawai'i, teamed with Mauna Lani head pro Nicholas Moxley yesterday to win their opening doubles match of the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger on the Big Island.
Oda, who won the state singles title in 1997 and '98 while attending Lahainaluna, and Moxley defeated Ti Chen and Kyu Tae Im, 2-6, 6-3 and 10-8 in the tiebreaker.
"My partner did really well and pulled us through," Oda said.
Meanwhile, the highest seed among the men to play yesterday — No. 3 Bjorn Phau of Germany —advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Eric Taino of the United States, while the women's No. 1 seed — Edina Gallovits of Romania beat Melissa Saiontz of the U.S., 6-1, 6-0.
Competition continues today at 10 a.m.

UH SECOND IN WAC
The University of Hawai'i softball team was picked to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference by the conference coaches yesterday.
Fresno State received five first-place votes and was picked to finish first with 35 points. Hawai'i got the two other first-place votes and finished with 30 points. Nevada was third with 26 points.
UH first baseman Tyleen Tausaga and outfielder Kaulana Gould were named to the pre-season All-WAC team.
Fresno State shortstop Christina Clark was named preseason Player of the Year and Robin Mackin was Pitcher of the Year.
