TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"American Idol," 7 p.m., Fox. Last week brought the Chicago and Denver auditions, and we saw awful moments, including someone who came all the way from Ukraine to sing badly. We saw great ones, including Lisa Tucker, who drew instant and well-deserved praise from Simon Cowell. He called her the best 16-year-old he's ever heard. We also saw a thoroughly likable cowboy from a town of four. Cowell was nasty but fun, as usual. Paula Abdul was lively, apparently recovered from last season's haze. The only problem came when Abdul and Randy Jackson inexplicably conspired to send a hyperactive, low-talent "singer" to Hollywood, thus demeaning the whole process. Tonight, the show moves to North Carolina, a state that already has provided Clay Aiken and Fantasia. These auditions are in Greensboro.

OF NOTE

"Anna and the King of Siam" (1999), 6 p.m., American Movie Classics. The classic "King and I" story gets a fresh version, slow and lush. Jodie Foster stars with Chow Yun-Fat.

"NCIS," 7 p.m., CBS. Two Korean women, both married to Marines, have been killed.

"Rodney," 7:30 p.m., ABC. Rodney has to come up with something nice to say about an aunt with no obvious good traits.

"The Lion King 1 1/2" (2004), 8 p.m., Disney Channel. This made-for-video project focused on the movie's two comic characters: Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella) tell what they claim really happened in the first story.

"Love Monkey," 9 p.m., CBS. In this new series' second episode, hero Tom is depicted as an earnest chap whose sole love is good music. But he is scheming and lying to land a pop star for a benefit concert.
