For Dara Pagaduan, atonement came with one swing.

The third baseman's two-out grand slam in the top of the 12th inning lifted Kamehameha over Saint Francis, 6-2, yesterday at Kamamalu Field and put the Warriors a game ahead of the second-place Troubadors in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I softball race.

Pagaduan's two-base throwing error in the 10th accounted for the tying run that helped prolong the 3-hour, 20-minute battle.

The Warriors (12-1) can clinch the title Wednesday with a win against Sacred Hearts, 3:45 p.m. at Kamehameha and secure a state tournament berth. The Troubadors (11-2), ILH Division II champions last year, can earn the league's second state berth with a win against Maryknoll, 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at Moili'ili Field. Of course, Saint Francis can force a playoff with a win should the Warriors lose.

"I was mad at myself for that (error)," Pagaduan said. "It feels awesome (to win), but I regret throwing that ball away."

She had nothing to feel ashamed about. Her homer to right-center was her fifth hit in six at-bats yesterday.

"That's Dara," Kamehameha coach Ty Sing Chow said. "I said last year she was a phenom. This year, she's just magical."

The game was unlike the earlier meeting that the Warriors won, 8-0. Aces Noe Esperas of Kamehameha and Brittany Akana of Saint Francis kept their teams in the game with clutch pitching. Esperas gave up nine hits, two runs (one earned) and a walk with 10 strikeouts for the complete-game win. Akana allowed three runs on 11 hits and three walks with a hit batsman and five strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings.

"It was very nerve-racking," Esperas said. "You just had to hang in there, have confidence throughout the whole game."

It was frustrating for the Troubadors, who tied the score 1-1 in the fourth on Shannon Lum's bullet grounder off first baseman Brittany Clark's glove for an RBI single.

The Troubadors saw the potential winning run thrown out at the plate in the eighth inning on a perfect throw from center fielder Shalese Javillo to catcher Kahea Alohikea that nailed the sliding Kayln Lee.

Also, in the Saint Francis 10th, Kelci Watson reached on Pagaduan's error. Lee followed with an infield single, with Watson taking third. Ashley Smith's ground-rule double scored Watson, but Lee was sent back to third when the ball rolled under the left-field fence. Lee would have easily scored.

In the top of the 12th, the Warriors sent eight batters to the plate. Jasmine Knight led off with a walk, took second on Charina Sumner's sacrifice and stayed there when Javillo reached on a fielder's choice grounder to third. That ended Akana's day.

"She was tired," Saint Francis coach Mark Glushenko said. "We could tell. She didn't have that pop on her ball any more."

Akana was replaced by Sasha Koki, who walked Kaui Tom to load the bases. Clark bunted to the pitcher for a force at home for the second out before Pagaduan's homer cleared the bases.

Javillo drove in Kamehameha's other two runs with a third-inning single and solo homer to right in the 10th.

"Saint Francis, they don't know how to give up," Sing Chow said. "We were fortunate in that our girls don't know how to give up either."
