Koreans are not all the same. Your neighbor in Makiki, Kahala, Hawai'i Loa Ridge or Hawai'i Kai may well be Korean. But would you treat them like a native Korean or Korean- American? The two are very different.
The first Koreans arrived in Hawai'i on Jan. 13, 1903, aboard the USS Gaelic. Korean Americans celebrated the milestone's centennial three years ago with events across the country.
Honolulu hosts a Korean festival at Kapi'olani Park each year. The fourth annual festival is planned for June.
The second wave of Koreans came to the United States in the 1970s. Hawai'i's Korean community today numbers about 55,000, with another 45,000 of part-Korean ancestry.
As generations pass, cultural identity often diminishes. Descendants of the 1903 immigrants may not speak Korean or know many of the customs and traditions. Koreans have assimilated well into the local community, making great contributions to the state. While they think like Americans, they are proud to be Korean and still enjoy kim chee as a staple in their meal.
Koreans who came in the second wave of the 1970s have their own character. They remain fluent in Korean — perhaps speaking English with a strong accent — and well versed in customs and tradition. Second-generation children are more familiar with the Korean language and have seen customs as practiced by their parents. The second generation educated here tries to assimilate into the community but sometimes undergoes an identity crisis — am I American or Korean?
But the main difference between native Koreans and Korean-Americans of the second wave of immigration is frame of thought. Those who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1960s and '70s came as Koreans from that era; for them, time has stood still for 35 years. But Korea has changed. The country is now the world's eighth largest economy and ultramodern. The people have adopted many American values, becoming more liberal and independent in thought.
For a Korean arriving in the second wave, his or her children were raised in an environment reflecting 1970s Korea. Compared to native Koreans, second-wave immigrants may be considered more conservative or old school. For example, Korean-American families in Hawai'i often hold to the custom of multiple generations living in one household. But more and more families in Korea are now nuclear, with the grandparents living on their own.
