For those who figured on Kahuku and Kalaheo to be the boys basketball favorites in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division, add Kaimuki to the mix.

The Bulldogs remained undefeated at 5-0 in the OIA East after holding off Kalaheo, 54-53, last night at McKinley's Student Council Gym. The Mustangs fell to 2-1.

Keone Reyes made one of two free throws with 14 seconds remaining to put Kaimuki up, 54-51. Kalaheo missed the front end of a one-and-one two seconds later, but got the rebound. The ball went out of bounds under the basket with four ticks left, and after two timeouts, the Mustangs were unable to find anyone open beyond the 3-point arc and had to settle for Marvin Judd's uncontested layup for the game's final points.

"I knew they had two timeouts and probably would change their play, so I switched our defense from zone back to man (after the first timeout)," Bulldogs coach Kelly Grant said. "We tried to play them outside-in, and we got big-time lucky. If the game lasted 30 seconds longer, we probably would have lost."

Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said Kaimuki "defended the (last) play well" and deserved the victory for what it did earlier.

"We had our chances late, but the bottom line is you cannot play well for just eight out of 32 minutes and expect to win," Furtado said.

Behind crisp team passing and sharp shooting, the Bulldogs built a 41-27 lead late in the third period, before Chris Tumaneng's 3-pointer at the buzzer cut it to 41-30. In the final quarter, the Mustangs rallied back sparked by Koa Siliga's eight points and closed to 53-51 with 1:27 remaining after Mana Guerreiro's putback.
