8 from Hawai'i advance at Pipeline

Eight Hawai'i competitors advanced to the fourth round of the Rockstar Games Pipeline Pro bodyboarding contest yesterday.
The second and third rounds were completed in 10-foot waves at the Banzai Pipeline.
Jarret Lau of Wahiawa led the Hawai'i contingent, scoring a 9.0 (out of 10) for successfully riding through a big Pipeline barrel.
Other Hawai'i competitors advancing were Paul Benco, David Hubbard, Brian Wise, Happy Zurowski, Derek Miyashiro, Vaj Lederer and Nick Shand.
Australia's Adam Benwall scored the only perfect 10 of the day in his third-round victory.
The top seeds in the event had byes yesterday, including Hawai'i competitors Jeff Hubbard and Mike Stewart.
Jeff Hubbard is one of several bodyboarders still in contention for the 2005 world championship. The Pipeline Pro is the final event of the International Bodyboarding Association's 2005 World Tour.
Among the Hawai'i competitors eliminated yesterday were Pipeline standouts Kainoa McGee and Spencer Skipper.
The final day of the contest is expected to run today, conditions permitting.

FREITAS TO SPEAK AT UHH FUNDRAISER
Rockne Freitas, Hawai'i Community College chancellor and former NFL All-Pro lineman, will be the guest speaker at the annual dinner-auction fundraiser for the University of Hawai'i-Hilo baseball program.
The buffet dinner is scheduled for Jan. 23 at the UH-Hilo Campus Center. A silent auction starts at 5:30 p.m. with dinner beginning at 6:30. The UHH Chamber Singers will provide entertainment.
Cost is $50 per person. Corporate tables of eight are $500 and includes 25 game tickets.

SERVICES FOR FORMER KAIMUKI AD MONDAY
The memorial service for former Kaimuki football coach and athletic director Charles Miyashiro is set for 6 p.m. Monday at Nu'uanu Memorial Park and Mortuary.
Visitation is from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
