Punahou School freshman Christel Simms broke Keiko Price's 1995 meet record in the 100-yard freestyle and Iolani's boys and girls swept the team titles yesterday at the 29th Annual Kalani Swimming and Diving Invitational.

The meet at Kalani pool featured 27 public and private school teams from three islands.

Simms won the 100 free in 51.77 seconds, clipping Price's record of 51.79. Price, a 1996 Mililani High School graduate, went on to become a Pac-10 Conference champion and set three school records at UCLA.

Simms' teammate, Rachel Cote, broke Meredith Egloria's 2004 record in the 100 backstroke. Cote's time of 58.91 topped Egloria's mark of 59.22. Egloria, a Kapolei senior, won the 50 and 200 free yesterday and did not compete in the 100 backstroke.

Cote and Simms also were part of the Buffanblu's record-setting 200 medley and 200 free relay teams. The medley relay team of Cote, Simms, Brittany Beauchon and Michelle Yoshida finished in 1:47.13, breaking the mark of 1:52.50 set by Waiakea in 2001.

The 200 free relay team of Yoshida, Jenna Sheeley, Simms and Cote finished in 1:38.13, beating the record of 1:41.04 set by Punahou last year.

Beauchon set a record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.14 in Friday's preliminaries, topping her own mark of 1:05.91 set two years ago.

Iolani won the boys team title with 386 points, followed by Punahou (365) and Kamehameha (260). The Raiders won the girls team title with 428 points, followed by Punahou (411) and Kamehameha (215).

SOFTBALL

MILILANI TOPS PEARL CITY, 6-2

Makani Duhaylonsod pitched a five-hitter and drove in two runs, and Casey Sugihara went 3 for 4 with a double and three runs scored last night to lead defending state champion Mililani past Pearl City, 6-2, at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

The Trojans (8-1) took sole possession of first place in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference Western Division, with three regular season games remaining. Pearl City (7-2) falls to second place.

Mililani broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth inning, thanks to a passed ball, Duhaylonsod's double and a wild pitch.
