The works of conceptual artists Vince Hazen and san shoppell (yes, all lowercase à la ee cummings) are on view at The ARTS at Marks Garage through Jan. 29.

A press release says Hazen uses cockroaches, slug slime, mold and dust, eliciting "ewws." But as in British artist Chris Ofili's "elephant dung" paintings, the (to some) unappealing materials are more mind than matter. Almost invisible, something like moth dust adds an intellectual layer to what are actually accessible, graphic works (often screenprints) in "Vince Hazen: The Transfigured Pedestrian."

By treating the normally discarded as precious, believes Hazen, we learn to elevate the quality of our lives.

"San shoppell: running with scissors" is for people who like to watch — and touch. The artist's multimedia creations invite people to become part of them. Viewers get to draw, move and document their own experience through her carefully crafted "stations."
