It's never too early in a new year for sensory overload. So we'll simply talk up this month's installment of First Thursdays poetry slams by offering the lineup: HBO Def Poetry Jam performer Mollie Angelheart; Nuyorican Poets Cafe poet Ainsley Burrows; live animation by Solomon Enos, live painting by Aaron Martin, the Storekeeper and Dhyana Zagri; Microscopic Syllables DJ A2Z on the turntables; and Honolulu slam poets.

At 8:30 p.m. tonight at the Hawaiian Hut, $3 before showtime, $5 thereafter. 387-9664.

FINAL WORD

"I'll tell you what'll get it cracking. You got to have a Prince record called 'Do Me, Baby.' You got to have Heatwave's 'Always and Forever.' The whole archive of Luther Vandross will get it going."
