Chase Moses scored a team-high 13 points to lead five players in double figures as Kalaheo routed Waimea, 93-36, in a state tournament first-round game at Radford's Jim Alegre Gymnasium.

Kalaheo (10-3), the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's third-place team, will play four-time defending state champion and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Iolani (11-2) in today's quarterfinals at 8 p.m. at Radford.

"Iolani is real disciplined," Kalaheo point guard Chris Tumaneng said. "They're known for their defensive traps. As coaches say, they have a lot of role players, and players such as Kawika Shoji and Vinny Nip who can step it up."

The Mustangs pounced on the Menehunes (7-2) — the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champions — and led 30-6 after the first quarter. Moses and Marvin Judd each had six points, and Koa Siliga and Tyler Caswell five each for Kalaheo.

In the first half, Kalaheo hit 12 of 25 field-goal attempts, and made 16 of 18 free throws. The Mustangs led 42-19 lead at intermission.

"We just ran into a buzz saw," Waimea coach Elton Montemayor said. "We got off slow, and were down 7-0 at the beginning. We had some shots at the basket, but we couldn't finish."

The Menehunes made two field goals in the first quarter, and shot 6 of 26 from the field in the first half. They finished the game 12 of 57 from the field.

Waimea was scoreless in the third quarter until Chad Barba's putback with 3:14 left in the period.

"We just told the boys to compete," Montemayor said. "Kalaheo's a tremendous team, and we watch them on OC-16. The television doesn't do them justice."

Kalaheo played its reserves in the third quarter and increased its lead to 70-28 after three periods.

"It was good to get off to a good start," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "We came out with some intensity, got that big lead, and we were able to play a lot of people."

Furtado played 13 players last night, and 12 scored at least two points. Judd finished with 12 points, and Elias David, Siliga and Kahua Hollinger added 11 each.

The Mustangs finished the game shooting 34 of 64 from the field, and connected on 22 of 29 attempts from the foul line.

Brendan McDaniels led Waimea with 14 points and Barba added 11.
