1 dead, 1 hurt in stabbing

A woman was killed and a man injured last night at Kuhio Park Terrace in what officials said appeared to be a stabbing stemming from a domestic dispute.
The victims, both in their 60s, were found in a third-floor apartment in Building B. The woman died at the scene. The man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center.
The incident was reported at 7:40 p.m. after witnesses reported hearing an argument.
HONOLULU
SUSPECT CHARGED IN BUILDING FIRE
A 52-year-old man was charged Saturday for allegedly starting a fire on Jan. 31 that caused more than $10,000 in damage to the state Department of Health's downtown headquarters.
John R. Denis, who has no permanent local address, was arrested by police Friday at the Institute of Human Services homeless shelter. He was being held in lieu of $15,000 bail. He has an initial appearance scheduled tomorrow at District Court.
Police said he was identified through a CrimeStoppers tip.
The fire in the entryway of the building at 1250 Punchbowl St. prompted the closure of the Health Department building to the public on Feb. 1. The fire was reported at 6:30 p.m. and Fire Department officials said a flammable liquid was used.
Firefighters found a gas can in a trash container and reported that the glass on the front door was broken.
Between 10 and 15 Health Department workers were in the building when the fire broke out, but no one was injured.
KANE'OHE
MAN DEAD AFTER DIVE INTO POOL
A 19-year-old man injured when he dived into a swimming pool from the second floor of a Kane'ohe residence died early yesterday at the Castle Medical Center.
Police said the man dived head-first and hit the bottom of the pool at a Holopu Place home at 1:20 a.m. yesterday. Other people who had jumped into the pool brought the man out of the pool.
The man died at 2:16 a.m.
The medical examiner's office was awaiting confirmation of identity before releasing the man's name.

RESILIENCE IN LOCAL KIDS TOPIC OF TALK
Emmy Werner, who has headed longitudinal studies of Kaua'i children for 40 years, will speak at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the East-West Center's Jefferson Hall as one of the keynote speakers at a national research conference on multiethnic families.
The conference, "Multiethnic Families: Development, Identity and Well Being," sponsored by the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Center on the Family, runs from tomorrow through Thursday.
Werner's free public presentation is entitled "Risk and Resilience: Lessons from the Lives of Children from Multi-ethnic Families."
She has published several books on the results of the study team that followed children born on Kaua'i in 1955 to determine the key factors of resilience that protect children at high risk of failure.

RECYCLING DRIVE FOR STUDENTS' TRIP
A group of Mililani High School students and parents will hold a HI 5¢ recycling drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the school parking lot across from the Mililani Public Library on Meheula Parkway.
The group is accepting donations of redeemable cans and glass and plastic bottles to raise money for a trip to Europe during spring break. Call Sharon Abe at 455-3630.

MEMORIAL HONORS FALLEN SOLDIER
Tripler Army Medical Center recently dedicated a plaque and poster in honor of Master Sgt. Thomas Wallsmith, a former Tripler soldier who was killed in Iraq.
Wallsmith died Oct. 26 from injuries sustained when a homemade bomb exploded near his vehicle in Rustamiyah, Iraq. He was 38 years old.
At the time of his death he was serving as senior healthcare noncommissioned officer in the 3rd Forward Support Battalion, Division Support Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga. He is survived by his wife and two children.

TODDLER READING WORKSHOP FEB. 27
Liliha Public Library will host an "Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library" workshop at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 27 at the library, 1515 Liliha Street.
The program is designed for parents and caregivers of children 2 to 3 years old. It will teach the importance of early literacy and how to develop pre-reading skills so that every child enters school ready to learn to read.

INDO-FIJIAN POET TO READ HIS WORK
Mohit Prasad, an Indo-Fijian poet, will hold a reading from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Campus Center 301 at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo.
Prasad, director of the Pacific Writing Forum at the University of South Pacific in Suva, Fiji, will read from two of his books of collected poetry, "Eyes of the Mask" (1998) and "Eating Mangoes" (2000), as well as from manuscripts that are being readied for publication.
His appearance is sponsored by the UH-Hilo Student Activities Council.
