UH softball splits pair of games in Las Vegas

Malama Manuma belted a pair of solo homers as the University of Hawai'i softball team beat Utah, 5-4, in eight innings yesterday at Las Vegas.

Manuma homered in the second and sixth, when the Rainbows scored three run to tie the game at 4-4.

In the eighth inning, the international tie-breaker rule was in effect. Hawai'i's Kaulana Gould was placed at second base with no outs and advanced to third on a ground out by Brandi Peiler. Tyleen Tausaga singled to right to put Hawai'i up one.

In the bottom half, Utah (3-4) had a runner at third with one out, but Jessica Shiery lined out to shortstop Julie Franklin, who threw to third to double up the runner and end the game.

In the second game, New Mexico (1-6) scored five runs in the third inning of a 7-3 win.

Tausaga and Alana Power homered for Hawai'i (6-4).

UH-HILO DROPS PAIR

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo softball team lost two games to ranked opponents yesterday at the Schutt Division II Leadoff Classic in Phoenix.

In the first game, No. 9 San Francisco State beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 6-4.

The loss sent the Vulcans to the Silver Bracket, and they lost to No. 20 St. Leo (Fla.), 3-0.


BASEBALL

VULCANS ROUTED

Jared Prince batted 4 for 4 with two RBIs, and Kamehameha Schools alum Zach McAngus went 3 for 4 as Washington State routed Hawai'i-Hilo, 11-3, yesterday at Wong Stadium.

Nick Ison allowed one run in six innings for Washington State (6-1).

Hilo dropped to 2-11.


GOLF

GRAND SLAM STAYING

The PGA Grand Slam of Golf, a made-for-TV event featuring the winners of the year's four majors, will stay on Kaua'i this year, the tour said yesterday.

PGA of America officials considered moving the elite four-man event to another city. A number of locations, including Las Vegas and the Caribbean, expressed interest in hosting the tournament.

The 36-hole event will be played Nov. 21-22. The purse was increased to $1.25 million from $1 million.

The Grand Slam has been played at Po'ipu Bay Golf Course since 1994.
