MILILANI — Kalaheo secured its usual spot in the boys basketball state tournament for the 16th consecutive season last night after running past Mililani, 74-60, in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association quarterfinals.

The Mustangs (10-3) will play Eastern Division rival Kaimuki in Wednesday's semifinals at McKinley. West champion Mililani ends its season at 10-1.

The Trojans fired up their home crowd of about 700 by jumping out to a 13-4 lead, but Kalaheo responded with a 16-0 run that carried over into the second period and never trailed again.

Senior Marvin Judd started the comeback with a block on a Mililani fast break. He finished with a season-high 19 points.

"We just had no intensity at the beginning, and Mililani was all intense and their crowd was so loud and everything was in their favor," Judd said. "But we just needed a big play, and I think the block helped us get started."

Fellow senior Chris Tumaneng got the Mustangs' run going on offense with a short banker, Kahua Hollinger followed with two jumpers and then Judd tied it at 13 with a 3-pointer. Hollinger then made a steal at halfcourt and sailed in for the layup to give Kalaheo the lead for good.

The Mustangs sank 13-of-16 free throws in the first half, led by Judd's 8 of 9, and took a 38-27 lead into the break. In the second half, Kalaheo was 18 of 27 from the line, led by point guard Tumaneng's 7 of 9.

The closest Mililani got in the second half was 65-55, but Tumaneng, Judd and Chase Moses made five free throws down the stretch to seal it.

"I told our guys to play the final quarter one minute at a time, and Chris showed leadership at the end," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said.

campbell 61, moanalua 59: The West No. 2 seeded Sabers outscored East No. 3 Na Menehune 22-8 in the fourth quarter at Kahuku. Walter Daniels made a lay up with 5 seconds remaining to give Campbell a 61-59 lead. Moanalua was fouled with one second to go and missed two free throws — the second one intentionally — and got the rebound but missed the putback as time expired.
