Kalaheo advances in OIA tourney

Chris Tumaneng made a 15-foot bank shot and then sank a free throw with 8.9 seconds remaining last night to lift Kalaheo to a 43-42 victory over Kapolei in the first round of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association playoffs at Radford.
The Mustangs (9-3) will play at Western Division No. 1 seed Mililani (10-0) in tonight's quarterfinals at 8:30. Kapolei's season ends at 6-5.
The Hurricanes worked the ball down the floor and had an open 15-footer from the left wing rim out, and the putback also failed to fall as time expired.
Kalaheo has qualified for every state tournament since 1991, and needs a victory tonight to keep that streak alive.
"Coach told us yesterday about the 'Kalaheo aura,' that we've been making states every time," said Tumaneng, a 5-foot-8 guard in his fourth year on the varsity. "Everyone expects us to make it to the state tournament, so we're trying to live up to that."
The Mustangs, who are the No. 4 seed in the East, saw their streak in jeopardy after Kapolei's Tommy Lewis swished a 3-pointer from the left corner to give the Hurricanes a 42-39 lead with 1:10 remaining. Cheynne Lishman made a free throw with 47 seconds left to close it to 42-40, and the Hurricanes then missed two free throws with 36 ticks remaining.
After Kalaheo worked the ball around the perimeter for an open shot, Tumaneng spun from the right wing and pulled up near the free-throw line and was fouled as he put up the left-handed jumper.
"I think Chris is a leader, and when the game is on the line, that's when you look to your leaders to take shots like that," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said.
