Motorcyclist dies in crash with car

HILO, Hawai'i — A 41-year-old Volcano man was killed Thursday after a car turned in front of his motorcycle on Hawai'i Belt Road near Glenwood, police said.
Police said Jack M. Napeahi Jr. was riding a Suzuki motorcycle south on the highway shortly before 9:06 p.m. Thursday when a Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park woman in a 2003 Honda two-door sedan attempted to make a left turn from the highway onto Lehuanani Road in front of him.
Napeahi, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at Hilo Medical Center at 10 p.m.
The 46-year-old driver of the Honda was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, negligent homicide and failing to yield the right of way, police said. She was later released pending further investigation.
POLICE ID BABY WHO DROWNED
KIHEI, Maui — Maui police yesterday identified the 5-month-old baby who apparently drowned in a bathtub Tuesday as Tysha Rodriguez-Furtado.
An autopsy said the manner of the death was consistent with being submerged in water, said Lt. Glenn Cuomo. He said there were no other signs of injury.
The drowning was reported at 11:11 a.m. Tuesday at a Kihei Villages home. The baby was pronounced dead at Maui Memorial Medical Center at 12:45 p.m.
Police continue to investigate the baby's death.
A service for Tysha will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Borthwick Norman's Mortuary. Her survivors include her parents, Cassaundra Stevens and Tyler Rodriguez-Furtado.
CITY NOMINEE WITHDRAWS NAME
Electrical engineer Richard F. Schiavoni has withdrawn his nomination by Mayor Mufi Hannemann to serve as city director of the Department of Design and Construction.
Schiavoni was most recently chief of the Far East Engineering Division for the U.S. Army Engineer District. Hannemann spokesman Bill Brennan said Schiavoni, who was appointed Jan. 9, withdrew his name from consideration last month, citing family concerns.
"The search is under way," Brennan said.
TUNNEL CLEANING TO CLOSE PALI LANES
Pali Highway will be closed in the Honolulu-bound direction between Kamehameha Highway and Waokanaka Street from 7 p.m. today until 7 a.m. tomorrow for tunnel cleaning, according to state Department of Transportation plans.
