High-wind advisory issued

A high-wind advisory is in effect today for O'ahu, Kaua'i and Ni'ihau with winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts to 50 mph expected.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory last night and said it would be in effect until 8 p.m. today. A cold front is passing through the Islands and causing strong and gusty north winds, the weather service said.

Gusts as high as 50 mph may hit the south and west sides of the three islands, especially along ridge lines and in valleys, the weather service said. The winds are expected to begin subsiding at sunset today.

Officials advise residents to secure loose objects that could become airborne.

FISHERMAN PULLED FROM WATER DIES

A 46-year-old man died after he was pulled unresponsive from the waters off Kahe Point Beach Park yesterday afternoon.

Police said the man had gone into the water to go fishing and began to yell once he got to the reef. A friend on shore said the man then got back in the water, but a few minutes later was found unconscious.

Fire rescue personnel were called about 5:30 p.m. They recovered the man and brought him to shore, where he was pronounced dead.


BIG ISLAND

MAN KILLED IN CRASH IDENTIFIED

HILO — Big Island police have identified the 30-year-old Hilo man who died Monday after a car crash on Akaka Falls Road as Jason L. Matuszak.

Police said Matuszak was driving a 2000 Toyota 4 Runner east on Akaka Falls Road near Honomu Road shortly before 9:40 p.m. Sunday when he ran off the right side of the road and overturned in a pasture.

He and two passengers were ejected from the vehicle. The passengers, a 32-year-old Hilo man and 22-year-old Hilo woman were in satisfactory condition.

HAWAIIAN GROUPS CAN SEEK GRANTS

The U.S. Department of Education has made $9.5 million in competitive grants available to Native Hawaiian educational organizations, public and private nonprofit organizations, agencies and institutions with experience in developing and operating Native Hawaiian programs or programs for Hawaiian language instruction.

Awards are expected to be from $375,000 to $1.1 million and may cover a period of up to 36 months. The deadline to apply for the grants is March 24.

MOLOKA'I

APPLY FOR STATE ID CARD MARCH 4

KAUNAKAKAI — State workers will be on Moloka'i on March 4 to process applications for State of Hawai'i identification cards.

Applications may be filed at the Mitchell Pauole Center from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fee is $10 for residents 65 and older and $15 for others.

New applicants must provide an original Social Security card and a certified copy of their birth certificate or resident alien card.

NEW HIGH SCHOOL SEEKS APPLICANTS

Island Pacific Academy is accepting applicants for its first high school class, which will graduate in 2010.

Applications are due before Feb. 17, when the first round of application reviews are expected to take place. Island Pacific is taking applications for pre-K through ninth grade.

Only one grade will be added to Island Pacific Academy's high school each year, starting with ninth grade next year.

TALK ON PARENTING AT IOLANI SCHOOL

Robert Brooks will lead a parent discussion entitled "Raising Resilient Children and Adolescents" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at Iolani School's Seto Hall. The cost is $10 at the door.

Brooks is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and has served as director of the Department of Psychology at McLean Hospital, a private psychiatric hospital.
