Charges filed in beating of man

A 19-year-old man arrested Friday in connection with the beating of his 51-year-old uncle in Kuli'ou'ou was charged with second-degree attempted murder yesterday.
A preliminary hearing for Chad Nishihira was scheduled for Thursday.
Nishihira had been acting strangely at their home Friday before he was seen beating his uncle in the front yard at about 1:55 p.m., family members told police. Relatives were unable to separate them and called police. Officers arrested Nishihira after a brief struggle.
The uncle was taken to a hospital in critical condition with head and chest injuries.
MAN, 24, ARRESTED IN SEX ASSAULT CASE
A 24-year-old man was arrested yesterday in connection with the sexual assault of a woman last December.
The 19-year-old woman told police she met a man at a mall on Dec. 23 and that he convinced her to go to his home. The man sexually assaulted her there, police said.
The woman reported the incident to police, but the man went into hiding, police said. Yesterday, officers with the East Honolulu crime reduction unit arrested the suspect at his Wai'alae Avenue home.
The man was in police custody last night pending possible charges of first- and third-degree sexual assault.
