When a player goes against his coach's game plan, things usually go wrong.
Not the case for the Kamehameha Schools boys basketball team, which beat visiting Saint Louis, 54-49, in overtime last night.
Randy Cummings received a pass on the left wing and hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in overtime as the Warriors improved to 10-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
"I was ready to choke his neck when he shot the ball. But he made it so I love him," Warriors coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "We were trying to set up for the last shot, but he's a real confident player and he's worked hard on his shot, so he took it upon himself."
Saint Louis' Jeremiah Masoli missed a 25-footer on the next possession and the Warriors' Rykin Enos was fouled and hit two free throws with 6 seconds left for the final margin.
On Cummings' 3-pointer, Andrew Godinet dribbled past half court, stumbled in the paint after being confronted by a couple of Saint Louis defenders and passed to his wide-open teammate.
"Coach drew up a play where he wanted us to run down the clock as much as possible and look for only layups," said Cummings, who finished with six points.
"But when I saw myself open ... it's one of those moments where you're not thinking anything at all, you're just in the moment. I just followed through and thankfully it went it."
In regulation, Enos hit a spinning floater from the right side of the lane with 7 seconds remaining to tie it at 45.
"The lane was open so I figured I'd take it and drive," said Enos, who hit a similar shot to beat Iolani on Jan. 21.
The Crusaders' Cole Shidaki missed a 3-pointer from the left baseline just before the buzzer.
Enos finished with 16 points for Kamehameha and Jacob Ho added 10.
Saint Louis' largest lead was 33-26 with 4:18 left in the third quarter, but the Warriors scored seven in a row to tie it with 1:09 left in the period.
Saint Louis (6-4) hurt itself by hitting only 11 of 26 free-throw attempt, including 4 of 13 in the fourth period and overtime.
"We had a lot of chances," Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan said. "We couldn't close the deal at the free-throw line. We had a 7-point lead and we didn't take care of the ball."
