Iran, through modern lenses

Reviled as either the land of ayatollahs or exoticized as the mecca of sensual miniatures and silk carpets, Iran is a mystery to most Americans. Its identity is unveiled in "Persian Visions: Contemporary Photography from Iran," on view at the Honolulu Academy of Arts through April 16. The exhibition is the first survey of contemporary Iranian photography to be shown in the United States.
The 20 artists featured in "Persian Visions" are some of the country's best-known photographers, who also have followings in Europe.
From Shahriyar Tavakoli's series of family portraits to Shahrokh Ja'fari's stark landscapes, the show offers insight into the artists' self-exploration and cultural expression.
Viewers see Iran as seen by Iranians, rather than visiting foreigners.
The Tehran Museums of Contemporary Art developed the exhibition with the University of Minnesota.
