WAILUKU, Maui — Charmaine Tavares will be sworn in as mayor of Maui County during a public inauguration that begins at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle Theater in Kahului.

Tavares, a five-term councilwoman, defeated Mayor Alan Arakawa in the November election. Her late father, Hannibal Tavares, served as mayor during the 1980s.

The mayor-elect announced more Cabinet appointments yesterday, naming Sheri Morrison as managing director, the No. 2 post in the administration. Morrison has been an executive assistant and policy analyst to Tavares on the County Council. Prior to that, she was Arakawa's budget director.

Tavares also named Francis Kau as first assistant to the managing director; Deidre Tegarden, current head of Big Brothers Big Sisters Maui, as economic development coordinator; and C. Mahina Martin as public information officer. Martin is active in numerous community and Hawaiian groups and sits on the Hawaiian Homes Commission.

Victor Reyes will work as energy commissioner in the Office of Economic Development, promoting the use of sustainable, renewable energy and working on programs to support agriculture. He has his own consulting firm, BioEnergy Systems, which collaborated on a feasibility study for a bioethanol-cogeneration plant in the Philippines and site selection analysis for an ethanol plant project in Hawai'i.

Also working in the Office of Economic Development will be JoAnn Inamasu, who will continue to be responsible for the Workforce Investment Act program in Maui County, and Benita Brazier, who will continue as film commissioner.

Other staff are Anna Ribucan as the small-business advocate, Annette Pauole-Ahakuelo as the Moloka'i small-business specialist, and Cheryl Sterling, who will work with the Hawai'i Tourism Authority Product Enrichment Program grants.
